ILLEGAL PURCHASE AND EXPORT OF FISH

THE MINISTRY OF FISHERIES AND MARINE RESOURCES HAS NOTED WITH DISMAY THE INDISCRIMINATE PURCHASE AND EXPORT OF FISH FROM YEALIBOYA/BAILOR, GODERICH AND TOMBO WHARVES TO THE REPUBLIC OF GUINEA.  INVESTIGATIONS HAVE FURTHER REVEALED THAT BUYERS COME IN DROVES FROM GUINEA, USING CANOES TO BUY FRESH FISH FROM THE MENTIONED AREAS AT AN INFLATED COST. THIS HAS NOT ONLY CAUSED UNTOLD HARDSHIP ON THE LOCAL LICENSED COMPANIES WHO CANNOT COMPETE AS A RESULT OF THE INFLATED COST BUT HAS ALSO LEAD TO INCREASED USE OF ILLEGAL NETS BY LOCAL FISHERMEN AND SHORTAGE OF FISH SUPPLY IN THE LOCAL MARKET.

FURTHERMORE, IT HAS BEEN ASCERTAINED THAT THESE BUYERS DO NOT PAY TAXES TO GOVERNMENT AND THAT, CANOES ILLEGALLY EXPORT FISH TO NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES FROM THESE WHARVES. THIS DOES NOT ONLY UNDERMINE THE ACCURACY OF THE MINISTRY'S CATCH DATA BUT ALSO DEPRIVES GOVERNMENT OF MUCH NEEDED REVENUE. BUYERS FROM NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES ARE ADVISED IN THEIR OWN INTEREST TO GO THROUGH THE DUE PROCESS.

THE MINISTRY WOULD LIKE TO REMIND THOSE ENGAGED IN THE PRACTICE THAT, IT IS ILLEGAL TO PURCHASE OR EXPORT/LOAD FISH WITHOUT PERMIT AND THEREFORE CALLS ON DEFAULTERS TO DESIST FROM SUCH ACTS WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT OR FACE THE FULL PENALTY OF THE LAW.

MRS. MARIATU KOROMA,

PERMANENT SECRETARY

MINISTRY OF FISHERIES AND MARINE RESOURCES
